Malaysia’s Minister of Agriculture Meets with Humane Society International and the Malaysia Cage-Free Egg Producer Organization to Discuss Advancing Cage-Free Initiatives

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, November 12, 2024 – In a significant step towards promoting sustainable agriculture and animal welfare, YB Datuk Seri Haji Mohamad bin Sabu, Malaysia’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, met with representatives from Humane Society International (HSI) and the Malaysia Cage-Free Egg Producer Organization (MCFEPO). The meeting, held at Wisma Peladang, Menara LPP in Kuala Lumpur, focused on the future of cage-free egg production in Malaysia.


Discussions on Cage-Free Progress and Challenges

HSI presented the current progress and challenges in the transition to cage-free egg production in Malaysia, with updates on notable producers like TC Poultry Farm, Huat Lai, QL Resources, and LTP. Emphasizing both animal welfare and sustainable practices, HSI highlighted the impact of cage-free systems on the environment and the growing consumer demand for ethical egg production.


Government Support and Policy Incentives

A significant part of the discussion revolved around potential government support and policy incentives that could encourage wider adoption of cage-free practices. Minister Mohamad Sabu expressed interest in understanding how cage-free systems align with Malaysia’s sustainable agriculture goals and welcomed ideas on integrating animal welfare into national farming policies.

Invitation to MCFEPO Launch Event

MCFEPO and HSI formally invited the Minister to inaugurate the organization’s launch event on November 23, 2024. The Minister expressed enthusiasm about attending and supporting MCFEPO’s mission to improve animal welfare in Malaysia’s egg production industry.


Future Engagements on Global Best Practices

HSI proposed a 2025 study visit to Europe, aiming to learn about advanced cage-free practices and sustainable farming methods. The Minister showed keen interest, indicating ministry representatives may join the delegation to explore these global standards and apply insights in Malaysia.


Positive Outcome and Commitment to Cage-Free Farming

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to advancing cage-free farming in Malaysia. Minister Mohamad Sabu’s anticipated presence at MCFEPO’s launch event reflect the government’s support for initiatives that align animal welfare with sustainable agriculture.
