BANDAR BARU BANGI, October 20, 2024 — The Malaysia Cage-Free Egg Producer Organisation, in collaboration with the Department of Veterinary Services and under the patronage of Humane Society International, successfully concluded a landmark two days workshop on October 19-20, 2024, to develop comprehensive Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for cage-free egg production in Malaysia. The event was expertly led by Dr. Mohamad Hisham Fariz, a leading figure in veterinary services.
Held in Hotel Bangi Resort, the Cage-Free Egg Producers SOP Development Workshop aimed to transition the nation’s egg production industry to more humane and sustainable practices by adopting cage-free systems. This initiative is supported by Dr. Saravanakumar S.Pillai, Senior Advisor for Farm Animal Welfare, Policy, and Engagement at Humane Society International, reflecting a growing commitment to animal welfare.
Over the course of two intensive days, participants engaged in sessions that covered essential topics such as housing and facility requirements, stocking density, feed and water management, and biosecurity measures. The workshop emphasized practical, real-world applications and included group sessions where participants drafted sections of the SOP tailored to the unique needs of Malaysian producers.
“The development of SOPs is a critical step in ensuring that all cage-free egg producers adhere to the highest standards of animal welfare and operational efficiency,” said Dr. Hishamfariz . “This workshop not only provided the tools needed to achieve these goals but also fostered a collaborative environment for sharing best practices and challenges.”
The workshop culminated in a series of draft SOPs that will be refined and implemented across the industry. These standards are expected to pave the way for significant improvements in the quality of life for laying hens across the country, aligning with global animal welfare standards.
The Malaysia Cage-Free Egg Producer Organisation is dedicated to transforming the Malaysian egg industry by promoting and implementing cage-free practices that ensure the welfare of hens and sustainable production methods.
