In a significant move toward promoting better welfare food sourcing, Malaysia Cage-Free Egg Producer’s Organisation (MCFEPO) has launched the Cage-Free Implementation Star Rating, a pioneering platform that publicly tracks corporate progress in fulfilling cage-free egg commitments in Malaysia.
As the 2025 deadline for cage-free implementation approaches, this platform empowers stakeholders, consumers, and ESG analysts to clearly see which companies are delivering on their promises to advance animal welfare.
About the Initiative
Developed by the Malaysia Cage-Free Egg Producers Organisation (MCFEPO) in collaboration with Humane World for Animals, the Cage-Free Implementation Star Rating reinforces the principles of responsible sourcing, corporate integrity, and transparent reporting.
Participating companies encouraged to use this platform to update their implementation progress regularly, ensuring that achievements are visible, verifiable, and valued by the public and industry observers alike.
Why the Cage-Free Implementation Star Rating Matters
Over the past few years, leading hotels, retailers, Cafe’ and food producers across Malaysia have pledged to transition to cage-free eggs. While these commitments mark a positive start, actual implementation is the true measure of corporate leadership.
The implementation star rating provides a clear, star-based ranking system:
This transparent framework not only holds companies accountable, but also recognizes and celebrates progress, highlighting organizations that are actively contributing to a better welfare and sustainable food system.
Introducing the Yellow Card and Red Card Categories
To further enhance transparency and accountability within the Cage-Free Implementation Star Rating platform, two symbolic classifications, the Yellow Card and Red Card been introduced. The Yellow Card applies to companies that have publicly made a cage-free commitment but have not yet provided any form of progress reporting. This designation serves as a constructive nudge, encouraging companies to begin disclosing their implementation milestones and timelines, and to engage more openly with their stakeholders.
The Red Card, on the other hand, is assigned to companies that actively use eggs or egg-based products in their daily operations such as in hospitality, food retail, airlines, confectioners, food service, catering, or manufacturing but have failed to make any cage-free commitment whatsoever. This category highlights a more serious lapse in corporate responsibility, signaling inaction in the face of growing industry standards and consumer expectations for humane sourcing.
Both the Yellow and Red Card classifications are designed not to punish, but to inspire renewed commitment, promote honest dialogue, and uphold the values of ethical leadership in the food industry. They offer clarity for consumers, ESG analysts, and stakeholders who are increasingly demanding transparency in animal welfare practices.
A Constructive, Non-Punitive Approach
This platform is designed to encourage honest reporting and continuous improvement, not to name and shame. It aims to:
The star rating system , Yellow Cad and Red Card designation are not compliance audits but part of a voluntary, trust-based reporting platform that rewards integrity, effort, and accountability.
A New Benchmark for ESG Excellence
As Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria become central to investment, procurement, and brand reputation, the inclusion of meaningful animal welfare data is now a key expectation.
By participating in the Cage-Free Malaysia Implementation Star Rating, companies can:
Corporate ESG reporting is incomplete without transparency on animal welfare practices and the Cage-Free Implementation Star Rating offers the platform to showcase that commitment.
A Call to Action:
Companies listed under the Yellow or Red Card categories are strongly encouraged to engage with the Malaysia Cage-Free Egg Producers Organisation (MCFEPO) to either activate a formal cage-free commitment or to begin mapping out their implementation journey. MCFEPO offers technical guidance, access to certified producers, and strategic support to help businesses align with their animal welfare goals. Whether your company is ready to make a new pledge or needs assistance to turn existing commitments into action, MCFEPO welcomes collaboration and is committed to facilitating a smooth, credible, and scalable transition. Reach out today to co-develop a tailored roadmap and demonstrate your leadership in ethical sourcing.
We call upon all corporations in Malaysia whether in hospitality, food retail, food service, catering, or manufacturing that have made cage-free commitments to accelerate their implementation journey.
Now is the time to:
Let’s build a transparent, humane, and sustainable food system for Malaysia together.
