Malaysia Celebrates Milestone in Cage-Free Egg Production

Malaysia Celebrates Milestone in Cage-Free Egg Production: Nearly 145,000 Per Day Certified Humane Better Welfare Produced Eggs Now Available Daily from Liang Kee Farming and TC Farm

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – 18 May 2025 – Malaysia’s farm animal welfare landscape is undergoing a transformative shift as two of the nation’s most progressive producers, Liang Kee Farming and TC Farm announce their daily production of nearly 145,000 per day Certified Humane cage-free and free-range eggs. This marks a historic achievement in the country’s movement toward ethical, transparent, and sustainable food systems.

Liang Kee Farming, the producer behind the Love Eggs brand, currently supplies 30,000 Certified Humane free-range eggs per day. This figure is set to triple to 100,000 by 2026 with the completion of its Big Dutchman Natura Step multi-tier aviary system, a state-of-the-art structure designed to support high-welfare, high-efficiency egg production. Meanwhile, TC Farm, which markets its eggs under the Genki brand, is producing 30,000 Certified Humane eggs daily and will increase to 45,000 eggs with the commissioning of its third aviary by end of July, 2025. Both farms are fully compliant with the rigorous standards of the Certified Humane® certification, offering hens the ability to walk, perch, nest, dust-bathe, and lay eggs in environments that support their physical and psychological well-being.

Mr. Tan Leng Yee, Managing Director of Liang Kee Farming, emphasized the importance of animal welfare in their operations:
“Like anything else, if you treat the animals well, they will treat you well too. We started exploring the cage-free system initially for our own family’s consumption, and the positive feedback encouraged us to expand. Our commitment ensures that hens can express natural behaviors like scratching, pecking, dust-bathing, and outdoor roaming attributes that define true free-range farming. This isn’t just farming, it’s our way of honoring the life and dignity of every bird, while staying well ahead of industry standards.”

Mr. Tiew Siew Sien, Managing Director of TC Farm, shared his reflections on this achievement:
“ Genki Cage-Free Eggs is more than product placement, it’s about creating a ripple effect in how food is sourced, consumed, and valued. At TC Farm, we believe that better welfare of animals, transparent ESG practices, and sustainability can go hand-in-hand with profitability and progress. Every carton sold is a step closer to a food system that respects both people and animals.”

Dr. Saravanakumar S. Pillai, Senior Principal for Policy and Engagement for Farm Animal Welfare at Humane World for Animals, praised the leadership demonstrated by these farms.
“This isn’t just about numbers. It’s about values. Liang Kee and TC Farm are proving that humane egg production is possible at scale, without compromising productivity or ethics. Every humane-certified egg on Malaysian shelves is a symbol of freedom and dignity for animals and a promise kept to the growing number of consumers demanding better.”

Encouragingly, more big-name producers across Malaysia are already following in the footsteps of Liang Kee and TC Farm. A new wave of investments into better welfare egg production is underway, with additional producers transitioning from conventional systems to cage-free and free-range models that prioritize animal well-being. As more farms enter this space, the supply of better welfare produced eggs is expected to stabilize, leading to a more nominal and affordable market price, making ethical eggs accessible to everyday consumers more affordable without compromising standards.

This shift is not only measured in metrics, but also in the voices that have too long gone unheard. In a heartfelt open letter to consumers, the hens now free from confinement offer their gratitude:
“Thank you for choosing our eggs. We are the hens who laid these eggs, and we want to thank you from the bottom of our feathered hearts. Because of your choice, we are no longer locked in wire cages. We can walk on soft bedding, spread our wings, perch and bathe in dust as we were meant to. Your support gives us comfort and freedom. Every egg you choose is a vote for our happiness and health. You may not hear our clucks, but please know we feel your kindness in every egg you buy. With every carton, you change our lives. With love and gratitude, Your happy hens.”

These powerful testimonies come at a critical time, as the end of 2025 nears a deadline by which many Malaysian corporations pledged to fully transition to cage-free egg sourcing. With nearly 145,000 humane-certified eggs now produced daily, the infrastructure and supply are ready to support those promises.

Shunmugam Sethuraman, Chairman of the Malaysia Cage-Free Egg Producers Organisation (MCFEPO), issued a direct call to action:
“The work has been done. The supply exists. Our producers have led the way. Now it’s time for buyers to step up. Corporations that committed to cage-free sourcing must act. There is no longer a shortage of supply only a need for courage and integrity in procurement.”

In a strategic move to catalyze further action, MCFEPO will host the Malaysia Cage-Free Implementation Forum: From Promise to Practice on 28 June 2025 at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC). The forum will gather producers, buyers, certification bodies, NGOs, and policymakers for a national dialogue on implementation strategy, procurement reform, and progress tracking. The event is designed to provide a space where companies at different stages of their cage-free journey can share lessons, seek guidance, and commit to tangible next steps.

The forum will culminate in the Cage-Free Star Rating Recognition Ceremony, during which companies that have demonstrated real progress will receive their official MCFEPO Cage-Free Implementation Star Rating Award based on verified reporting and data.

Haraveen Rajamurthi, Secretariat of MCFEPO, explained the significance of the event:
“This is not about shaming or blame, it’s about visibility, collaboration, and impact. Our forum is structured to be practical and empowering. Companies will have the opportunity to learn, to be acknowledged, and most importantly, to move forward. We are not asking for perfection just for honesty, effort, and action.”

To further support transparency, MCFEPO has launched the Malaysia Cage-Free Implementation Reporting Platform, a centralized system where companies can log and display their progress. This platform enhances ESG and CSR reporting, provides public visibility, and ensures that companies are accountable to both consumers and stakeholders.

Dr. Saravanakumar reiterated the importance of transparency in this evolving landscape:
“We are in a time where visibility is credibility. This reporting platform ensures that commitments are not just press releases, but living proof of progress. Companies that want to earn the public’s trust must be willing to show their work.”

With the infrastructure, certification, and supply already in place, the pressure now falls on corporate buyers to fulfill their commitments. Hotels, retailers, restaurants, bakeries, airlines, and food processors have every opportunity to align their sourcing with the humane values they once pledged to uphold.

MCFEPO urges all stakeholders, especially those with 2025 cage-free pledges to join the Malaysia Cage-Free Implementation Forum and be part of the national transition from promises to practice. Together, Malaysia can set a regional example of how compassion, sustainability, and business integrity can thrive together.
