The Malaysia Cage-Free Egg Producers’ Organization and Malaysia Cage-Free Egg Producer Cooperative Limited is proud to celebrate the incredible achievements of Dr. Saravanakumar Pillai, Senior Adviser for Policy and Engagement at Humane Society International (HSI) and Adviser of Malaysia Cage-Free Egg Producer’s Organisation.
Dr. Saravanakumar S.Pillai has been honored with the 2024 PAWSitive Patron Award, one of the most prestigious accolades presented by Humane Society International for excellence in advancing animal welfare.
In addition to this honor, Dr. Saravanakumar was also nominated for the Excellence in Engaging Allies Award, underscoring his ability to inspire collaboration and foster meaningful partnerships across the animal welfare sector.
He has singlehandedly revolutionized the cage-free egg movement in Malaysia since joining the Humane Society International Farm Animal Welfare and Protection team. With his background as a government veterinarian, unparalleled people skills, and a robust network of professional connections, he has brought extraordinary momentum to the movement in just two years.
Key milestones of his journey include working closely with a battery cage egg producer, TC Poultry Farm to establish the first-ever cage-free aviary in Malaysia in 2024, proving that humane practices are both feasible and profitable. He also instimented small-scale farmers to form the Malaysia Cage-Free Egg Producers’ Organization and Cooperative, officially recognized by the Malaysian government in 2023, empowering small farmers with a voice in the policy arena. He also manage to secure the first meeting with the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security of Malaysia to discuss the viability of cage-free systems, an achievement that has sparked dialogue and progress within an industry long resistant to change.
Dr. Saravanakumar’s warmth, persistence, and ability to build trust have inspired both small-scale and large-scale producers to explore cage-free farming. In just two years, his leadership has made what was once unthinkable a tangible reality. He is celebrated for his sunny outlook and unwavering commitment, even in the face of challenges. His unique ability to balance humility with confidence and leadership has inspired everyone who works alongside him.
