KUALA LUMPUR, 28 October 2024 – During a talk show aired today on Astro Awani, the Chairman of the Malaysian Cage-Free Egg Producers Association (MCFEPO), Shunmugam Senthuram, highlighted the critical role of the organisation’s initiatives in assisting small-scale egg farmers to adopt cage-free egg production practices in Malaysia.
According to Meor Ezree Syazrin (Treasurer of MCFEPO) such initiatives would not only provide an opportunity for smaller-scale farmers to participate in a more sustainable egg industry but would also contribute to the long-term development of a sustainable ecosystem. “With organisation support and increasing consumer awareness, small farmers are expected to reap greater benefits under the new Malaysian standards being developed,” he stated during the show.
Shunmugam explained that, besides benefiting consumers, the initiative also opens doors for small farmers to enter the premium market segment. “By adopting cage-free farming practices, small farmers can offer certified, high-quality eggs, maximizing profitability within a more exclusive market,” he added.
However, he acknowledged that the transition from conventional systems to cage-free systems incurs additional costs, particularly regarding infrastructure and consistent monitoring. “Although the shift may take time, it provides consumers with a better choice.
In strengthening MCFEPO’s role in Malaysia, he announced the official launch of the organization, set for 23 November in Kuala Lumpur. The launch aims to introduce new initiatives within the national egg farming industry, focusing on sustainable and ethical cage-free egg production practices.
Through this launch, Meor Ezree Syazrin hopes to create a vital platform that will encourage more egg producers to transition to cage-free farming practices, contributing to a more ethical and sustainable industry in Malaysia.
